Hear Karla on the Big Screen!

In 2005 Karla contracted the orchestra as well as performed on clarinet on the film score to the Zeitgeist film Ballets Russes, a documentary depicting through the memoirs of the original dancers of the Ballet Russe the story of the famous ballet company that premiered Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and brought ballet to America. Composers David Conte and Todd Boekelheide wrote a beautiful soundtrack to this documentary, which opened in NYC and SF in November and went on to open in major cities across the country. It opened in SF at the Embarcadero Center, after which it went to the Opera Plaza and the Red Vic. The film and the music received critical acclaim by the New York Times and stayed at the top of the national critic’s picks list for over 20 weeks! For more information, visit www.balletsrussesmovie.com.

The soundtrack was released in 2006 by the Intrada label and is available on CD.

You can buy the soundtrack to Ballets Russes at www.amazon.com and www.intrada.com.

A second film score to Orozco: Man of Fire screens at Dolby Laboratories with plans to air on PBS

In 2006 Karla contracted a chamber orchestra and performed on clarinet for composer David Conte’s second film score, Orozco, a documentary about the life and art of Mexican artist and muralist Jose Clemente Orozco, a man who influenced artists such as Jackson Pollock and other prominent expressionists. The film was screened at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco with plans to air on PBS. Stay tuned for more details, or visit www.paradigmproductions.org for more information.

Nothingset Ensemble: A new music project

Composers Ted Hine and Darren Jones founded this awesome n.m.e., with some of the hottest young players on the scene in SF. Music is written or arranged for this eclectic and edgy instrumentation: clarinets, violin, cello, double bass, guitar, percussion, marimba, melodica, piano, and trombone. Visit www.nothingset.com for more information.

MikNawooj: A Hip Hop Project

Composer JooWan Kim has united with Oakland-based rapper extraordinaire Kirby Dominant and some of the hottest instrumentalists around to form MikNawooj. It’s straight-up hip hop with sic beats and even sicker lyrics. The instrumentation makes for a really fresh sound- piano, upright bass, drums, violin, cello, flute, and clarinet. We just released our first album, Great Integration. It’s about a prophet named MikNawooj and a black swordsman, the resurrecting of gods and the lords of the material world, battles on mountains, demons, and all this other crazy awesome wicked mythological stuff. Stay tuned for upcoming shows this fall…

Local artists worth checking out:

My friend and great composer, Ian Dickenson, is one of the truly talented up-and-comers in the Bay Area. He also plays a mean bass. Check him out at http://www.iandickenson.com.

Another talented young composer (and good friend) who is not afraid to write outside the box, Ryan Brown, can be found at http://www.ryanbrownmusic.net.

I also recommend checking out trumpeter extraordinaire and composer Erik Jekabson.  He is definitely one of the hottest jazz trumpet players around.  Check out his site for more info: http://www.erikjekabson.com.

Recommended Products:

For custom-made clarinet and saxophone mouthpieces for musicians of all levels, clarinet barrels and more, visit the site of my good friend and fine mouthpiece maker Clark Fobes at http://www.clarkwfobes.com.

For fun teaching methods and play-along books for teaching your students about jazz, go to Jamey Aebersold’s site at http://www.jazzbooks.com, and of course, have them get as many recordings as possible.  I love Amoeba Music on Haight Street for jazz and classical and everything else at a great price.
