Private Lessons: What to Expect

In order to get the most out of the private lesson experience and out of playing an instrument, regular practice is necessary.  It is important that parents work with the student to incorporate practicing into their weekly routine.  Private Lessons will allow each student to go above and beyond regular classroom musical experiences and also focus on each student’s unique strengths as well as give extra guidance on the more difficult aspects of their instrument.  The main areas of study will be technique, music theory and reading skills, tone production, and artistry and musicality.  Every student will be given the opportunity to select solo repertoire that enhances the quality of their musical experience. Students will also be invited to perform solo or with piano and also as small ensembles with other students at an annual recital.  More details about the annual recital will be given towards the end of the semester.   While the recital is optional, students are strongly encouraged to participate.  It is solely for fun and experience, there is no judge or competition involved.  Students who wish to enter solo competitions will be encouraged to do so and can prepare on an individual basis.  Date and Time of the Annual Recital is still TBA.  Students will also receive awards at the end of each semester based on their participation, practice record, and musical achievements.

Payment Policy

Tuition is $35.00 per ½ hour lesson, $50.00 for 45-minutes, and $70.00 per one hour lesson.

Tuition for the entire month of lessons is due on the first lesson of the month.  Payment can be made in cash, money order, or personal check.  In the event that a personal check is bounced, the amount of the check and any additional fees or bounced check charges will be due immediately in cash or money order.  Checks can be made payable to Karla Avila.

Attendance Policy

At the beginning of each month, tuition will be billed for all classes being offered in that month.  Lessons are to be viewed as a class for which tuition is due by the month.  As with any class, tuition must be paid for the entire month of classes regardless of whether a student chooses to attend all the classes offered.  In case of illness or in the event that a school activity comes into conflict with a lesson time, a make-up lesson will be offered if advanced notice is given that the lesson will be missed.  Advanced notice for school-related conflicts is 1 week and for illness is 24-hours. Same-day notice is acceptable in the case of emergencies or sudden illness.

If the teacher cancels a lesson due to illness, that lesson time will either be made-up or credited towards the next month’s tuition.  Because I am also an active performer in the bay area, there may be an occasional week in which the studio is not open.  You will be given advanced notice of such dates and either a make-up lesson will be given or tuition for that month will be adjusted accordingly.  You will not be charged for any time that the studio is not open.
